Turner 2011 Bikes. . . post show news.

Another year and another show under our belt. . . This was a good year for Turner Suspension Bicycles at the 2010 InterBike tradeshow in Las Vegas Nevada.

We had a lot to show this year including significant changes to the 5.Spot and Sultan frames, a new finish for all of our frames, a new RFX protoype for everyone to drool over, the infamous DHR and many other little tidbits for the industry insiders to buzz about.

Below are a couple of links to give you a taste of what Turner Bikes is bringing for 2011, while we are in the process of updating our website. The first is mtbr.com's virtual tradeshow booth for Turner Bikes and the second is bikeradar.com's coverage on Turner Bikes Outdoor Demo booth.

http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/news/article/interbike-2010-turners-upcoming-rfx-all-mountain-machine--27902

We should have our website fully updated in the next few weeks, so please be patient as we bring it all up to date.

Tyler Morland Wins Redbull 5000 on his New 2011 DHR

morland5000 from Dirt Pedaler on Vimeo.

On September 12th, 2010,  Tyler Morland won the second Redbull 5000 on his new 2011 DHR. With an extended list of top pros and elite riders, one hundred thirty-one to be exact, Tyler pushed his way through the pack to christen his brand new ride.

For those of you who need to be brought up to speed, the Redbull 5000 is a mass start DH race in Whistler, BC Canada. It consists of a large group of qualified riders sprinting through snow, slush and mud down a 5,020 foot descent! Tyler's winning time ended up being 21:49:82. . . with Curtis Keene 11 seconds back and Chris Kovarik a full 23 seconds behind.

With Kovarik followed by Keene leading the pack out of the starting gate, Morland had his work cut out for him. With only sheer determination as his fuel, Morland had to pass and out maneuver countless racers to take the lead. After over twenty minutes, the very physically demanding course had laid into him but failed to foster defeat as Morland crossed the finish line without another racer in sight!

Now we wait to see what Tyler Morland's next adventure has in hold for his 2011 Turner DHR. . .

2011 Turner DHR: an Interview with David Turner

There may not be a more anticipated and debated frame being released for 2011. In this interview David Turner (DT) takes the time to answer some of our most pressing questions.

The question everyone want’s answered.  How does the new DW DHR compare to the last production model DHR?
Materials? Mostly 6061, with some 6069 for higher load areas.
Suspension, rate, curve and feel? Well, this is certainly a DHR. It has the resistance to bottoming that I pioneered 10 years ago on the first DHR, not the same wheel rate of course, but it carries on the heritage of being able to take massive hits without slamming thru the end travel.
Demeanor on the trail? This bike is notably lighter feeling than its 07-09 predecessor, although the actual weight is not that much lighter, this is due to the location of the shock and my pursuit of mass centralization which have yielded a truly lighter feeling chassis. I wanted the weight of this bike to be carried as low and as far back as possible.  The mid section of the bike is also massively stiff, so combine this stiffness with butted tubes in the front and rear ends to keep the ‘swing weight’ of the bike low for a very light feel. This bike changes directions effortlessly; due to the very stiff mid section which takes the riders input and drives it right to the ground, the light extremities help it lean or change direction with just a thought

Geometry? Low and Slack!! 63.3HA, 13.4BB, 17.4 Cstay. Due to the excellent anti squat provided by the dw-link suspension kinematics I was able to go lower and slacker than I would have been comfortable doing before. This bike allows one to take pedal strokes where other bikes would be tearing the pedals off as the dw-link is keeping the plush suspension from dipping deeply into the travel with each pedal stroke.

Turner Rider, Dave Burdette gets 2nd at a MS Fundraiser Race!

Long time Turner Bikes rider and mega mileage altitude monster, Dave Burdette, placed second at the MS fundraser on the Colorado trail with an insane time of 11 hrs 19 minutes! The pic of the clean bike is from a couple days before the race while the second photo is from the finish after over 11 hours of riding through a couple hours of solid rain, with most of the race above tree line!

Dave had this much to say about the race "Just thought I would send a couple of pictures from the Colorado Trail... (the race was) fun but tough. The promoters raised about $20,000.00 for MS with the race." Sounds like time well spent. . . Congratulations Dave on the great race!

SRAM 2X10 Experience with Turner Bikes

SRAM is choosing to use the dw-link Turner Flux as one of the bike choices on their 'SRAM 2X10 Experience' tour. They are employing this channel to showcase their revered 2X10 platform this year at select locations nationwide. The Dealer Camp next week, ODD West, and Outerbike in Moab Utah  are among the first stops scheduled for the tour.  Turner Bikes is thrilled to join forces with SRAM in an effort to open more eyes to how a bike should ride.

Riders for too long have learned to numb their senses to inept handling and performing bikes. Turner Bikes has striven to provide a bike which could stand out among its peers as a foundation of how a bike should ride. And thus enriching the ride to a new level of rider to bike to trail sensitivity. Be one of the few to learn how the standard of how a bike is meant to ride has changed.

For more information on the SRAM 2X10 Experience go to sram2x10.com

Belgium native Peter Smet is the proud owner of the lightest built Turner Flux that we have seen to date! 9.4kg, which is 20.72lbs! It's a 2009 Turner Flux chassis with an interesting mix of parts. Below is Peter's recipe for weight savings:

Wheels: Tune KingKong - FRM XMD 333 - Sapim CX-ray
Fork: Magura MD100SL
Brakes: Hope X2 Race
Cassette: Sram 11-32
Chain: KMC X10SL Gold
Cranks: Tune BigFoot - Sixpack Ti - Specialité TA 26-38
Pedals: CrankBrothers Eggbeaters SL Ti Tuned
Tire: Schwalbe Nobby Nic 1.8
Handlebars: Easton EC90 CNT
Stem: Syntace F99
Seat: Tune Speedneedle

Front Derailleur: Sram XX
Rear Derailleur: Sram X0 carbon
Spacers: Carbon

WB Holder: Tune Wassertrager
Tubes: NoTubes
Cable Housing: Alligator Mini I-Links

And with this the first hat has been thrown in. . . if anyone can beat this weight send us a few pictures and a specification list. One of the pictures needs to be your bike on a working scale and it would need to be a dw-link model. And please no fake weights, non-functional builds or modified components since after all this is purely for bragging rights.

Turner Recap of the Fruita FatTire Festival

Another Fat Tire Festival in Fruita Colorado has come and gone. Just  another journey for the Turner Demo crew with their fleet of the best suspension mountain bikes available right? . . . hardly!

Some will look back and think about the world class scenic trail system, recall the heightened sense of camaraderie among riders and enjoy the memories of what was experienced.

Others, well others will try to remember what exactly happened those four short days and rejoice in the fact that it all seemed more like a dream than reality.

And this being the true magnificence of such an event as Fruita. . . the way all the riders feed off of each others energy in such a positive and enlightened way. Everyone brings their unique identity and takes away an experience that can be had no where else. Unless you made it there this year it may be time to mark the calender for next year to really understand this distinct event.

As a first hand observant the Turner Demo crew can only revel in the marvels of what they have seen, as with the local 'Mike the Headless Chicken' monument. It begins to sound more like a flurry of empirical segments of experience rather than your normal collection of bike geeks and racers collage that blurs one moment into the next.

What can be said is Turner Bikes brought their dw-link suspension mountain bikes with the hopes to open eyes on how a bike should ride and as always we found a very enthusiastic response. The people rode, they laughed and a good time was had by all. Then everyone went home with the lingering memories of what to expect next year at the Fat Tire Festival in Fruita Colorado.

Tyler Morland: Riding his dw-link 5.Spot at the Superenduro Italia

Last October, Tyler Morland and friends had a little side track in Italy which turned out to be the 'Superenduro Italia' .

Here is an image from issue 57 of Singletrack magazine from the UK Highlighting their adventure, which was a nice 5 page story.

As you can see, Tyler is killing it on his dw-link 5.Spot! It must be nice to find yourself in Italy wondering what you're going to do with your day off. . .  But those of us who are lucky enough to find themselves poised in this predicament have earned the right to shred some of the best places on the planet to ride. At least we normal people have to keep telling ourselves this as we dream about being in their predicament. Although this again is why Tyler gets to R&D Turner Prototypes where ever his riding career pulls him.
